In 1938, the Yellow River dike at Huayuankou was breached, and the overflowing waters flowed south into the Huai River, creating a floodplain in the border region of Henan, Anhui, and Jiangsu provinces. This new Yellow River divided eastern Henan into eastern and western parts.
