Overall, it is an excellent overlord fanfic that is worth a read. However, the latest chapters have disappointed me. I liked how the MC was going for a specific build, which is no longer happening. There is a lack of a focused goal for the MC, they say they are trying to get more powerful, but they are also not directly and effectively pursuing that goal. Furthermore, while I like the setting, the author is afraid to make the MC more unique than they started. By "unique" I mean a differentiating factor, while the MC has factors that differentiate him from those around him, he needs features to distinguish him from other protagonists like a unique ability or make him a more emotional character readers can get invested in. Neither of these seem likely so I just keep half reading the chapters for something good to happen.
The start is good, with the MC's roles as a doctor and a necromancer being without conflict. However, when the MC becomes a powerful necromancer, there is no need to maintain such pretenses. This leads to chapters feeling like entirely different novels. In one, we have a slightly magical doctor, and in the other, we have a powerful necromancer with his only magical society. This conflict may be resolved in later chapters, but i have better options to read.
It is a surprisingly deep and uplifting story. It has good pacing, and while there was some classic face-slapping and extravagance, it was not detrimental to the story. The power level was small for most of the story; however, while it ramps up massively at the end, it does not worsen the story. The end is also surprisingly emotional and provides a lovely bow without feeling rushed.
